Rangers were also thrashed 7-3 on aggregate by PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League playoff and have dropped into Europe's second-tier Europa League competition. BURNLEY, England, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Defender Matty Cash scored twice in the first half as Aston Villa won 3-1 at Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday to continue their winning run. Watkins and substitute Nicolo Zaniolo spurned late golden opportunities but Villa coasted to a second league win and provisionally climbed to sixth in the standings. Burnley's second straight loss left them down in 18th, though they have played only two games after last week's fixture at Luton Town was postponed due to stadium works at Kenilworth Road. Burnley travel to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup on Wednesday and Villa host Hibernian in the second leg of a Europa Conference League playoff tie on Thursday. Villa won the first leg 5-0.

Villa hit back with big win over Everton

BIRMINGHAM, England, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Aston Villa claimed their first three points of the Premier League season as John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Leon Bailey and Jhon Duran scored to secure an emphatic 4-0 home win over Everton on Sunday. "Last week was tough for us, full respect for Newcastle, they did a job on us," McGinn told Sky Sports. Villa opened the scoring through McGinn, who turned in Bailey's cutback in the 18th minute to put the hosts ahead at Villa Park. The Merseyside club lost another key attacker to injury as Alex Iwobi was taken off with what looked like a hamstring issue, before Bailey scored Villa's third. Everton host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and Villa travel to Scotland to face Hibernian in the first leg of a Europa Conference League playoff tie on Wednesday.

GLASGOW, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Celtic beat rivals Rangers 2-1 at Hampden Park on Sunday to lift a 21st Scottish League Cup title, as Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi repeated his heroics from last season's final with a brace. Celtic dominated throughout the contest to claim a third trophy under manager Ange Postecoglou. Furuhashi, who also scored twice in a 2-1 win over Hibernian in last season's final, missed a gilt-edged opportunity to put Celtic ahead in the 42nd minute, sending a header over the bar. Yet he quickly made amends by drifting into the six-yard box and slotting home a Greg Taylor cross two minutes later. Time after time, you're tasked to win at this club," Celtic captain Callum McGregor told the BBC.
Aberdeen sack manager 19 minutes after thrashing
  + stars: | 2023-01-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Jan 28 (Reuters) - Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen took just 19 minutes to sack manager Jim Goodwin after a 6-0 hammering at Hibernian on Saturday continued the club's woeful form. Goodwin was hanging on to his job after Aberdeen suffered a humiliating Cup defeat to sixth-tier Darvel on Monday and the latest capitulation proved the final straw. In a statement on the club's website, Aberdeen Chairman Dave Cormack did not mince his words. He has given it everything he can give it, but the simple facts are that the results since coming back from the World Cup break have been wholly unacceptable and the away form is utterly abysmal. Aberdeen are seventh in the table having conceded 11 goals in their last two league games.
Boyle was ruled out of the World Cup with a knee ligament injury two days before the Socceroos opened their campaign against world champions France, with the Hibernian player undergoing surgery on his ACL. The 29-year-old was instrumental in Australia's World Cup qualifiers, scoring three times and grabbing four assists. "There was no way he wanted to go (home), no way I wanted to send him home. Australia next play Denmark -- who are two points behind -- in the final group game while bottom side Tunisia play France, who have already sealed qualification with six points.
